# Best Shopify customs apps, by the job you need done

_By [Spencer Flaherty](https://origova.com/about), founder of Origova_

Search the Shopify App Store for customs and you get a mixed list: AI classifiers, bulk editors, spreadsheet tools and checkout duty calculators, all described as customs apps. They solve different problems. Installing the wrong category is the most common way stores end up paying for something that does not fix their actual blocker.

This page sorts them by job. Pricing and listing details were checked on **13 August 2026** and App Store pricing changes without notice — verify before you buy.

> **Where does your catalog stand?** — Origova scans every variant for missing or malformed HS codes, country of origin and weight — free, at any catalog size. [Run the free scan](https://apps.shopify.com/origova)

## The four categories

_What each category of customs app is for_

| Category | The job | You need it when | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classification | Suggests an HS code for a product | You do not know what code a product takes | DutyCode, other AI classifiers |
| Data quality | Finds and bulk-fixes missing or malformed customs fields | You have thousands of variants and no idea which are blank | Origova, HS Code & Origin Bulk Editor |
| Bulk import/export | Moves any Shopify field via spreadsheet | You are comfortable in Excel and want general-purpose control | Matrixify |
| Checkout duties | Quotes and collects duty from the buyer at checkout | You want DDP so buyers are not surprised on delivery | Zonos, Dutify, Shopify's own duties feature |

Most stores that arrive here searching for a customs app need the second row and think they need the first.

## Classification apps

These take your product title and description and propose a code. [DutyCode](https://apps.shopify.com/dutycode)'s listing describes bulk assignment with EU CN8, UK commodity code and US HTS extensions, confidence scores and explanations, writing codes into Shopify, plus an audit mode and an autopilot for new products. Its listing shows 25 free classifications, credit packs from $19 to $199 for 300 to 6,000 classifications, and a $9/month monitor plan. At the time of checking it showed a 5.0 rating from 2 reviews — a small sample worth noting.

Two honest caveats about this whole category. A confidence score is not a ruling, and the listing for DutyCode does not mention country of origin — so it may leave you with half the required data. We cover the trade-offs in more depth in [Origova vs Dutycode](/origova-vs-dutycode) and [Dutycode alternatives](/dutycode-alternatives).

## Data-quality apps

These assume you can get the codes and the blocker is scale. [HS Code & Origin Bulk Editor](https://apps.shopify.com/hs-code-origin-bulk-editor) from eComFixR updates HS codes and country of origin by collection; its listing shows a free tier up to 20 products per month, $9.99/month for up to 1,000 products and $19.99/month for unlimited, with annual billing at $99 and $199. The listing gives a launch date of 7 May 2026 and a 5.0 rating from a single review — one review tells you very little in either direction.

[Origova](/) sits here too. It scans the whole catalogue free at any size, reports every variant missing or malforming HS code, country of origin or weight, and applies fixes in bulk with an undo and a broker-ready CSV export. Its [pricing](/pricing) is a free full scan plus 30 fixes, $7.99/month up to 1,000 fixes, or $14.99/month unlimited. That is our own product, so weigh it accordingly.

## Bulk import/export tools

[Matrixify](https://matrixify.app/) is a general-purpose Shopify data tool rather than a customs tool, and it handles these fields as two columns among hundreds — `Variant HS Code` and `Variant Country of Origin`. Pricing checked on 13 August 2026: a free demo tier limited to 10 products per job, Basic at $20 per 30 days for 5,000, Big at $50 for 50,000, Enterprise at $200 for unlimited.

It is the right answer if you already live in spreadsheets and want one tool for every migration. It is the wrong answer if what you needed was to be told which 400 variants are blank — it will happily export 14,000 rows and leave the analysis to you. See [Matrixify for HS codes](/matrixify-hs-codes-shopify) for the detailed workflow.

## Checkout duty apps

Different problem entirely: quoting and collecting duty from the buyer so the parcel arrives DDP. Shopify has a native duties feature, and Zonos and Dutify are established third parties. Note Shopify's stated requirements for collecting duties at checkout — the carrier must support DDP labels, you cannot be using Shopify Fulfillment Network, and products must have HS codes applied.

> **The dependency runs one way** — Every duty-collection tool depends on your catalogue data being right first. A checkout duty quote built on a missing HS code is a guess dressed as a number. Fix the data, then decide about DDP — not the reverse.

## How to choose in two minutes

_Start from the symptom, not the category_

| Your symptom | The category you need |
|---|---|
| Shopify is blocking a shipping label for missing customs info | Data quality |
| I have no idea what code this product takes | Classification |
| I have the codes in a spreadsheet already | Bulk import/export, or the free inventory CSV |
| Customers are getting surprise duty bills on delivery | Checkout duties |
| I have 8,000 variants and no idea what is missing | Data quality, starting with a free audit |

> **Not customs advice** — Origova scans and bulk-fixes the customs data in your Shopify catalog. It does not replace a licensed customs broker and it does not make the final classification decision for you. Classification depends on the product's material, use, composition and origin. Verify classifications with the [HTS](https://hts.usitc.gov), [CBP rulings](https://rulings.cbp.gov), or a licensed customs broker.

## Frequently asked questions

### What does a Shopify customs app actually do?

It depends on the category. Classification apps suggest HS codes. Data-quality apps find and fix missing or malformed customs fields. Bulk import-export tools move the data in spreadsheets. Checkout duty apps quote and collect duties from the buyer. These are four different jobs and most stores need one or two, not all four.

### Do I need a customs app if I only ship domestically?

Usually no. But Shopify can request HS codes and country of origin once international markets or certain carrier services are enabled, which is why some domestic-only sellers see the prompt unexpectedly.

### Which is cheapest?

As of 13 August 2026, HS Code & Origin Bulk Editor lists a free tier up to 20 products per month, then $9.99/month for up to 1,000 products and $19.99/month for unlimited. DutyCode lists 25 free classifications, then credit packs of $19 to $199, plus a $9/month monitor plan. Matrixify starts at $20 per 30 days for 5,000 records. Check current pricing before buying -- these change.

### Can one app do everything?

Not really, and be sceptical of one that claims to. Classification is a judgment problem, data cleanup is an inventory problem, and duty collection is a checkout and carrier problem. They have little code in common.

### Does a customs app replace a customs broker?

No. Software can find gaps, apply decisions at scale and validate formats. It does not take responsibility for a classification, and no App Store listing changes who is liable for a declaration.
