# How to update country of origin in Shopify

_By [Spencer Flaherty](https://origova.com/about), founder of Origova_

Updating **country of origin** in Shopify is two clicks once you find the field. The awkward parts are finding every variant that needs changing, getting the format right, and knowing what origin actually means when your supply chain crosses borders.

> **Where does your catalog stand?** — Origova scans every variant for missing or malformed HS codes, country of origin and weight — free, at any catalog size. [Run the free scan](https://apps.shopify.com/origova)

## Where the field is

1. From the Shopify admin, go to **Products**.
2. Open the product.
3. Scroll to the **Shipping** section.
4. Click **Country of origin** and pick the country or region.
5. Save. The **Harmonized System (HS) code** field is directly there too — set both while you are in it.

## Correcting values that are already wrong

This is the harder case, and it is more common than blanks. A blank origin can block a label; a wrong origin sails through and becomes a misdeclaration. Nothing in Shopify flags it.

1. Products > Inventory > **Export**.
2. Sort or filter the `COO` column by value and read the list of distinct values. Wrong entries usually cluster — one supplier's whole range set to the warehouse country, for example.
3. Correct the affected rows.
4. Products > Inventory > **Import** and confirm.
5. Re-export and check the distinct values again.

> **Look at distinct values, not row counts** — A catalogue with three suppliers should not show eleven origin values, and a catalogue sourced from Asia showing a large block of `US` is usually a warehouse country that was recorded by mistake. Reading the distinct list takes a minute and finds errors that row-by-row review never will.

## The format

In the admin you pick from a dropdown, so format is not an issue. In a CSV it is the main issue: Shopify documents the inventory `COO` column as using **ISO country codes**.

_Correct values for common origins_

| Country | ISO code |
|---|---|
| China | `CN` |
| India | `IN` |
| Vietnam | `VN` |
| United Kingdom | `GB` (not UK) |
| United States | `US` |
| Italy | `IT` |
| Turkey | `TR` |
| Bangladesh | `BD` |

## What origin actually means

Country of origin is where the goods were **produced or last substantially transformed**. It is not:

- Where your warehouse or 3PL is.
- Where your business is registered.
- Where the brand is from.
- Where the shipment departs.

For finished goods bought from a supplier, origin is a question for that supplier and worth having in writing. For goods you assemble, finish or kit yourself, whether that constitutes substantial transformation is a real legal test that varies by product and destination market. That one is worth a licensed customs broker rather than a best guess applied to a whole product line.

_Common situations and who can answer_

| Situation | Who decides |
|---|---|
| Finished goods bought wholesale | Your supplier, in writing |
| Goods printed or decorated in another country | Broker — may or may not be substantial transformation |
| Kits assembled from multi-country parts | Broker |
| Own manufacturing, single country | You |
| Dropshipped goods | The supplier who ships them |

## Doing it at scale

For hundreds or thousands of variants, see [bulk editing country of origin](/bulk-edit-country-of-origin-shopify) — the short version is to group by supplier rather than by collection, and to use the inventory CSV rather than the product CSV. To find which variants are blank or suspicious in the first place, run a free [Origova](/) scan; it reports missing origin, HS code and weight per variant and applies grouped fixes with an undo.

> **Not customs advice** — Origova scans and bulk-fixes the customs data in your Shopify catalog. It does not replace a licensed customs broker and it does not make the final classification decision for you. Classification depends on the product's material, use, composition and origin. Verify classifications with the [HTS](https://hts.usitc.gov), [CBP rulings](https://rulings.cbp.gov), or a licensed customs broker.

## Frequently asked questions

### Where do I change country of origin in Shopify?

From the Shopify admin, go to Products, open the product, scroll to the Shipping section, and use the Country of origin dropdown. It sits directly above the Harmonized System (HS) code field.

### How do I fix a country of origin that is already wrong?

The same way you set a blank one, but find them first: export the inventory CSV, filter the COO column by the incorrect value, correct those rows, and re-import. A wrong value is harder to spot than a blank because nothing errors.

### Is country of origin where I ship from?

No. It is where the goods were produced or last substantially transformed. Recording your fulfilment centre's country because that is where the parcel departs is a misdeclaration.

### What if a product is made in one country and assembled in another?

Whether assembly counts as substantial transformation is a legal test, not a preference, and it varies by product and destination. This is a genuine broker question -- do not guess it across a product line.

### Does country of origin affect what my customer pays?

It can. Shopify says accurate duty calculation requires both HS codes and an origin, and warns that missing or inaccurate information may result in additional duties charged to the customer on delivery.
