Using Matrixify for HS codes and country of origin

Matrixify is a general-purpose Shopify import/export tool, not a customs tool — but it is one of the more reliable ways to write HS codes and country of origin across a large catalogue, because it treats them as ordinary columns in a spreadsheet you control.

The two columns

The whole job comes down to two data columns on the Products sheet:

Both are per variant, not per product, because that is where Shopify stores them. A 6-size, 8-colour product is 48 rows in your file, not one.

The minimum file

Matrixify's tutorial is explicit that you can delete every column you are not using. The minimum is an identifier for the product, an identifier for the variant, and the data you want to write:

That is a valid update file. Note the origin values are codes, not names — IN and CN, not India and China.

The workflow

Export products from Shopify through Matrixify.
Delete every column except the identifiers and the two data columns.
Fill in the values, grouping by material for HS codes and by supplier for origin.
Import the file back.
Read the Import Comment column on any failed rows, fix those rows only, and re-import them.

The Import Comment column is the useful part Matrixify reports per-row failures with an explanation rather than failing the whole file. Re-importing only the corrected rows is faster and safer than re-running a 14,000-row file to fix nine mistakes.

When you do not need Matrixify

Worth saying plainly: if HS code and country of origin are the *only* fields you are changing, Shopify's own inventory CSV already has an HS Code column and a COO column, exported and imported from Products > Inventory, at no cost. That covers the same two fields.

Note the fourth row. Matrixify is excellent at writing data and does not analyse it. Exporting 14,000 rows to find the 400 blanks in a spreadsheet is a job in itself — see HS code automation for large catalogs, or run a free Origova scan to get the list first and then write it back with whichever tool you prefer.

The short version

Two columns, Variant HS Code and Variant Country of Origin, plus an identifier for the product and one for the variant. Delete everything else. Fix failures from the Import Comment column. And if these two fields are all you need, check the free inventory CSV first.
