How to bulk edit country of origin in Shopify

Setting country of origin in bulk is a slightly harder problem than setting HS codes in bulk, for one structural reason: Shopify's documented bulk-editor column for customs data is the Harmonized system code. Origin is documented as a dropdown on the product page. So the fast path most people reach for is the wrong one.

Here are the five routes that do work, with the trap that breaks most attempts.

Method 1: the inventory CSV (free, and the one most people miss)

Shopify's inventory CSV — not the product CSV — carries a COO column, documented as the country of origin using ISO country codes, alongside an HS Code column. This is the free route to setting both fields across a whole catalogue.

Go to Products > Inventory and click Export.
Choose the locations and inventory states you need, and export.
Open the file and fill the COO column with ISO codes.
Go to Products > Inventory and click Import, upload, review the summary, confirm.

The product CSV will not do this Shopify's product CSV documentation does not list an HS code or country of origin column — its shipping-related columns are Requires shipping, Weight value (grams), Weight unit for display and Fulfillment service. If you have been trying to add an origin column to a product export, that is why it never stuck. Use the inventory CSV.

The trap: ISO codes, not country names

After any bulk origin import, do not trust the confirmation screen — re-export and count how many rows still have a blank COO. That number is the only honest measure of whether it worked.

Method 2: group by supplier, not by collection

This is the single change that makes bulk origin work. HS codes group by material; origin groups by supplier. Your Shopify collections are organised for shoppers and match neither.

If you use Shopify's Vendor field consistently, you already have your origin groups. If you do not, adding a supplier tag before the bulk edit will save more time than it costs.

Method 3: apps

Method 4: the default origin setting

Shopify allows a default country of origin for duty calculation, intended for stores whose products mostly share one origin. Used honestly it saves real work. Used as a blanket to avoid recording true origin on goods from several countries, it is a misdeclaration — and origin is where you ship *from* only if that also happens to be where the goods were made.

Before you start: find out what is missing

Every method above assumes a list. Shopify's admin does not produce one. Export the inventory CSV and filter for blank COO cells, or run a free Origova scan, which reports every variant missing origin, HS code or weight and applies fixes by group with an undo. Either way, get the list before you start editing.

Method 5: the inventory bulk editor

Worth knowing because it is free, native, and reaches more than the product-page bulk editor does. Go to Products > Inventory, select the variants, click Edit variants, then Columns, and add Country of origin. Shopify documents it there as a variant property alongside Harmonized system code and Weight — the only native screen that reaches all three customs fields in one grid.

The same two limits apply as everywhere else. It edits the variants you hand it, so you still need to know which ones are empty first — how to find the ones that are missing. And a variant set not to have its quantity tracked does not appear on the Inventory page at all, so it cannot be reached this way even though it still ships.

Frequently asked questions

Can Shopify's bulk editor set country of origin?

Yes. Shopify documents Country of origin as an inventory bulk editor variant property, alongside Harmonized system code and Weight — Products > Inventory > select variants > Edit variants > Columns. Two limits: it edits the variants you hand it, and variants set not to track quantity do not appear on the Inventory page at all. The inventory CSV remains the reliable route for a whole catalogue.

What is the fastest free way to set origin across many products?

The inventory CSV. Products > Inventory > Export gives you a file with a COO column, and Products > Inventory > Import writes it back. It is free and it covers the whole catalogue.

Why did my bulk origin import not work?

Almost always the format. Shopify documents the COO column as using ISO country codes, so China must be CN and the United Kingdom must be GB. Country names are not accepted.

Can I set one country of origin for every product?

Shopify allows a default country of origin to be set for duty calculation. That is a convenience for stores whose goods genuinely share one origin -- it is not a way to avoid recording true origin for goods that do not.

How do I know which variants still have no origin?

Nothing in the native Shopify admin lists them. You either export the inventory CSV and filter for blanks in a spreadsheet, or use a tool that reports missing fields across the catalogue.
