How to audit a Shopify catalog for the data customs reads

A Shopify catalog audit, for cross-border purposes, is a check of six fields on every variant you ship internationally: HS code, country of origin, weight, material, title and description. Not a conversion audit, not an SEO audit, not a feed audit — the layer customs and carriers read. A product page can convert beautifully and still be a liability at the border, because these are exactly the fields nobody optimizes. This page is the checklist, the order to work in, and what "complete" means for each field.

What a Shopify catalog audit should check for customs

FieldWho reads itWhat incomplete costs you
HS codeCustoms, carriers, duty calculatorsHolds, padded duty estimates, carrier rejection
Country of originCustoms (tariff treatment)Wrong duty rates, entry delays
WeightCarriers, duty-by-weight lanesLabel errors, surcharges
Materials/compositionClassification accuracy, some lanes' rulesMisclassification risk (fiber content changes apparel codes)
Clear titlesCustoms officers reading invoices"Item #4492-B" gets inspected; "Cotton crew-neck t-shirt" clears
Accurate descriptionsBrokers, dispute resolutionSlower manual review when parcels get flagged

Why this data decays

Every catalog starts incomplete and drifts worse: products arrive via CSV imports and app syncs that skip customs fields entirely, variants get duplicated without their data, and the fields live in a collapsed subsection of the Shopify admin nobody opens. Optimization here isn't a one-time project — it's a loop.

The optimization workflow that scales

Measure: get the gap list — you can't optimize what you can't see, and Shopify has no native report. Origova's free scan checks all six fields on every variant and gives you a readiness percentage. Fix in bulk: group by product type, apply per group, reversibly. Export: a customs-ready CSV your broker or forwarder can use as-is. Keep it moving: auto-sync re-checks anything added or edited, so readiness stays a live number instead of last quarter's project.

Where this pays off

Complete cross-border data isn't compliance theater. It's faster clearance (fewer manual reviews), accurate duty quotes at checkout (whichever calculator you use reads these fields), fewer carrier rejections at intake, and fewer surprise-fee refund requests. Since the end of de minimis, every one of those failure modes applies to every US-bound parcel — including the $25 ones.

A Shopify product data audit, step by step

Seven steps, in the order that avoids rework. Steps 1–3 are free and need no software beyond a spreadsheet.

  1. Scope it to what ships. Mark digital products, services and gift cards as not requiring shipping. They will never need customs data and they will otherwise pollute every count you take.
  2. Count variants, not products. HS code, country of origin and weight are all per variant. A 300-product catalog averaging four variants is 1,200 records, and the product list only ever shows you the first of each.
  3. Export both CSVs. The inventory CSV for HS Code and COO; the product CSV for weight. Neither file carries the other's fields, so this is two exports, not one.
  4. Filter for blanks and bad values. Blanks are the easy half. Also filter for HS codes outside 6–10 digits, weights at zero or below, and origin values that are country names rather than ISO codes.
  5. Check origin against the supplier, not the warehouse. The most expensive error in a catalog audit isn't a blank field — it's an origin confidently set to where you ship from.
  6. Read a sample of titles and descriptions as a customs officer would. If you can't tell what the product is made of and what it is for, neither can they.
  7. Record a baseline percentage, then re-check on a schedule. An audit is only worth the number it produces, and the number decays.

Finding the missing product data that affects customs

Shopify has no report for this. There is no "products with missing data" view, no filter on the product list, and no warning until a label purchase fails or a parcel is held. The gap list has to be built, and there are three honest ways to build it:

Two CSV exports and a spreadsheet. Free, and genuinely workable. The inventory CSV gives you HS code and origin; the product CSV gives you weight. Filter each for blanks and impossible values, then reconcile the two files on SKU.

The admin, product by product. Fine under about 50 variants and unreliable above that, because the customs fields sit in a subsection that's collapsed by default.

A full-catalog scan. One pass across every variant, all six fields, grouped by issue type with a readiness percentage. That is what Origova does, and the scan is free at any catalog size.

Worth being precise about scope: this is missing customs-related product data. If you are chasing a Google Merchant Center feed error or an empty product-page field that has nothing to do with shipping, that is a different problem and a different tool — see the section below on what this audit does not cover.

Cross-border product data quality: what “good enough” means per field

A field being non-empty is not the same as a field being usable. These are the thresholds worth auditing against, and they are the ones Origova enforces before a fix can be applied:

FieldPasses a blank check but still failsThe usable bar
HS codeFive digits, an odd digit count, stray letters6–10 digits, numeric
Country of origin"USA", "Made in China", the warehouse countryA valid ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code for where it was made
Weight0, 0.01, a negative numberGreater than zero, shipped weight including packaging
Material"mixed", "fabric", "assorted"A composition a classifier could act on
Title"Item #4492-B"At least three meaningful words describing the goods
DescriptionEmpty, or marketing copy with no product factsEnough for an officer to identify what it is

The placeholder column is the expensive one. A blank field fails loudly and gets fixed; a plausible-but-wrong value fails quietly and can produce a wrong duty assessment instead of a clean rejection.

Bulk editing the Shopify product data customs reads

Once the audit produces a list, the fixes are field-specific rather than one sweeping edit:

What this is not: a general Shopify bulk product editor. Origova bulk-edits six customs-related fields and nothing else — it does not touch prices, images, tags, inventory quantities, SEO fields, collections or metafields beyond the material value it writes. If you need those, a general-purpose bulk editor such as Matrixify, Ablestar or Hextom is the right tool, and it is worth having both rather than expecting either to do the other's job.

What this audit does not cover

Worth stating plainly, because "catalog audit" and "product data audit" get used for at least four different jobs and only one of them is this one.

This is not a conversion or merchandising audit, not an SEO or AI-discovery readiness audit, not an image-quality audit, not a pricing or inventory audit, and not a Google Merchant Center feed audit. It does not review collections, metafields, tags, variants-as-merchandising, or anything a PIM would call data governance.

It checks the six fields a customs authority, a broker and a carrier read, on the variants you ship across a border. That is a narrower job than the phrase suggests, and being narrow is the point — a scan that flags everything tells you nothing about what will actually hold a parcel.

Frequently asked questions

What does catalog optimization mean for cross-border selling?

Beyond conversion work like titles and images, it means completing the data customs and carriers read: HS codes, country of origin, weights, materials, and invoice-clear titles and descriptions on every variant. Incomplete data causes holds, padded duty estimates, and carrier rejections.

Which tools improve product catalog accuracy for international sales?

For the customs-data layer specifically: Origova audits every variant against a six-point check and bulk-fixes gaps reversibly; classification tools like Dutycode generate candidate codes; and Shopify's own bulk editor works for small catalogs with patience. Start with an audit — you can't fix what you can't see.

How often should I re-optimize catalog data?

Continuously, in practice: imports, app syncs, and new products reopen gaps constantly. Either re-scan before every launch and bulk import, or use a tool with auto-sync so changed products get re-checked automatically.

How often should I audit a Shopify catalog?

Before every bulk import and every market launch, and on a standing schedule otherwise. Imports and app syncs reopen gaps continuously, which is why a readiness percentage is more useful than a one-time project.

What is the difference between a Shopify product data audit and a customs readiness check?

A product data audit can mean almost anything — SEO fields, images, pricing, feed completeness. A customs readiness check is the narrow version: six fields, on the variants that cross a border. This page is the second one.

Does Origova audit every Shopify product field?

No. It checks six: HS code, country of origin, weight, material, product title and product description. It does not check or edit prices, images, tags, inventory quantities, SEO fields or collections.

Can I run a Shopify catalog audit without installing an app?

Yes. Export the inventory CSV for HS code and country of origin, export the product CSV for weight, filter both for blanks and impossible values, and reconcile them on SKU. It is two exports and a spreadsheet, and it works.
