Landed cost, explained for Shopify sellers
Landed cost is the true, all-in price of getting a product to your customer's door: the product itself, plus shipping, plus customs duties, plus import taxes, plus every fee collected along the way. Since the end of the US de minimis exemption, landed cost stopped being a big-importer concern and became every Shopify seller's problem — because duties are now owed on cross-border parcels from the first dollar of value, and somebody (you or your customer) pays them.
The formula, in plain English
Landed cost = product cost + shipping + insurance + duties + import taxes (VAT/GST) + fees (brokerage, disbursement, carrier surcharges). Two of those pieces — duties and taxes — are computed from your product's customs data: the HS code determines the duty rate, the country of origin determines which trade rules and tariff programs apply, and the declared value and weight feed the calculation. Wrong or missing data doesn't make the cost go away — it makes it a surprise.

Rates vary hugely by HS code and origin — that's the point. A misclassified product can swing the duty line by double digits, and an unclassified one gets estimated (padded) by the carrier or held at the border.
Who pays it — your two choices
DDU/DAP (customer pays): the parcel arrives, the carrier collects duties plus a fee from your customer before handing it over. Cheapest for you, brutal for reviews — "surprise $22 fee at delivery" is the #1 complaint pattern in cross-border e-commerce. DDP (you collect at checkout): you quote duties up front and remit them — better experience, but it requires calculating landed cost accurately at checkout, which is what platforms like Zonos charge four figures a year to do.
Where most landed-cost problems actually start
Not in the calculator — in the catalog. Every landed-cost tool, carrier estimate, and customs entry reads the same three fields off your products: HS code, country of origin, weight. If they're missing or malformed, every number downstream is wrong, whichever tool computes it.
